Monarch WLAX Powers Past Brevard, 15-7

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Monti Hendrix scored five goals and the Methodist women's lacrosse team used an 8-1 scoring edge in the second half en route to a 15-7 win over Brevard on Saturday afternoon at Monarch Stadium.
 
Hendrix opened the scoring just 21 seconds into the contest after she forced a turnover on the opening draw, scooped up the ground ball and weaved through the Brevard (0-3) defense for her first goal of the contest. Two and half minutes later, the Monarchs (1-1) took a 2-0 lead the first of Madison Ronelli's three goals on the day.
 
After the fast start, each team settled in and began trading scores either way. Brevard took a 4-3 lead on Kelly Kearnan's goal at the 16:36 mark before Hendrix answered 14 seconds later to tie the game at 4-4. The Tornados took what would be their last lead of the game (5-4) on Victoria Hayes' tally at 14:33.
 
Ronelli tied the game at 5-5 at 12:40, then put MU on top when she fed Emily Brennen for a goal at 11:30. After BC once again pulled even, Hendrix sent the Monarchs into the half nursing a 7-6 lead as she scored with just six seconds left on the clock.
 
Methodist opened the second half with six straight goals, including three from Brennen to assume a 13-6 lead by the 7:11 mark. The Tornados scored their lone goal of the second half with 6:28 to play before Hendrix and Ronelli iced the contest with two goals in the final 5:33.
 
For the game, MU outshot Brevard 27-19 and held a 15-8 edge in draw controls. The Tornados also racked up five cards, including four yellow cards, in the contest.
 
Molly O'Hara picked up the win in the cage, posting eight saves on the day. Shelby Arsenault made 11 saves for the Tornados.
 
Sarah Ewin picked up a game-high six ground balls and added four caused turnovers to go with a goal and an assist. Akili Jabulani had three caused turnovers.
 
For Brevard, Nina Siu had four points on two goals and two assists, and added two ground balls. Hayes scored three goals, and Kearnan caused three turnovers and won three draw controls.
 
The Monarchs are back in action on Tuesday at Salem beginning at 3:30 pm.
