Saints Sink Monarch MLAX With Late Goal

ARLINGTON, Va. -- A man-up goal with 11 seconds to play lifted the Marymount men's lacrosse team to a 7-6 win over the Methodist Monarchs on Saturday afternoon at Long Bridge Stadium.
 
Trailing 5-1 entering the fourth quarter, the Monarchs (0-1) used a five-goal fourth period to tie the contest at 6-6 on Cade Crew's goal with 32 seconds to play. However, a late penalty on the Monarchs led to a man-advantage for the Saints (1-0) and Sean Fried scored the game-winner off a fee from Matthew Ebert.
 
John Tartline opened a flurry of scoring in the fourth period with his first-career goal to pull MU within 5-2. After a Marymount tally made it 6-2 with 8:19 to play, the Monarchs reeled off four scores in a row to tie the game at 6-6. Matt Layden scored at 6:12, and two minutes later Bryce Kephart made it 6-4 with a man-up goal off a feed from Jack Bryan.
 
With 1:49 on the clock, Crews added another man-up goal, this one off a feed from Michael Bradley, which trimmed MU's deficit to 6-5 before he tied it up just over a minute later.
 
The offensive barrage in the fourth period for MU was in stark contrast to the first three quarters. The Monarchs recorded nine shots on goal in the final 15 minutes, compared to just eight total over the previous three quarters. Marymount held a 12-4 edge at the face-off X, and outshot the Monarchs, 34-28.
 
Clay Stevenson started in the cage for MU and made 11 saves. His counterpart, Grey Clarkson, also made 11 saves.
 
Bryan Cooley Jr. caused three turnovers for the Monarchs, and Parke Kissner and Andrew Mayefskie each had two. Stevenson scooped up a team-best five ground balls, and AJ Mejia added four to go with a goal.
 
Friedman finished with three goals and an assist for the Saints, and Ebert had two assists. Christian Lutz won 12 of 16 faceoffs, and Josh Williamson had a game-high seven ground balls. Hunter McGeeney ld the Saints with four caused turnovers and had three ground balls.
 
Methodist is home next Saturday against Piedmont beginning at 1 pm.
