FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist baseball team scored five runs in the fifth inning on its way to a 7-6 victory against Washington and Lee at Armstrong-Shelley Field on Tuesday evening.

With the result, the Monarchs move to 6-1 on the season and have won five-straight contests, while the Generals drop to 4-2 overall.

The Generals took an early lead in the first inning after drawing three walks and taking advantage of a pair of wild pitches to jump ahead 2-0. W&L also added a run in the second and fourth innings to take a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth frame,
Davis Cass started off with a lead-off single to right center field before moving to second on a wild pitch and taking third on another stray pitch.
Ethan Carmack and
Matthias Carter drew back-to-back walks to load the bases when
Clay Richardson reached on a throwing error by the shortstop that allowed two runs to score, 4-2. With two runners in scoring position, a wild pitch scored Carter from third to cut the lead to one run (4-3).
Alex Kachler drew a walk, one of four on the day, the again load the bases. After a pitching change,
Will May laced a double to right field to score two runs as MU took the lead, 5-4.

The Green and Gold plated a pair of runs in the following inning as it loaded the bases with two outs after a throwing error from the Generals. With the bases loaded, Richardson and Kachler each drew walks in consecutive at-bats to put the Monarchs up 7-4.

Washington and Lee made it interesting in the final frame as it put two runners in scoring position with one out. After a dropped foul ball to extend his at-bat, Ryan Monson grounded out to score a run and put a runner on third, who scored on Chadwick Feeley's single to left field, 7-6. The next batter struck out swinging to preserve the victory.

Tyler Carmen (2-1) tossed 4.1 innings of relief and yielded two runs on four hits with four strikeouts to earn his second win of the year.
Thomas Dean and
Kevin Williams combined for 3.0 innings on the mound with five strikeouts and just one hit.
Will Walker entered in the ninth and struck out two batters to earn his third save of the year.

Carmack was 1 for 3 at the plate with two runs scored and a walk, while Kachler scored once after reaching base four times via a walk.

For the Generals, David van Geluwe (1-1) was strapped with the loss after throwing 4.2 innings and giving up five runs – all unearned. He walked five and gave up just one hit in the start. Five pitchers took the hill for W&L on Tuesday.

Feeley was 2 for 3 at the plate with two RBI, a run scored and a walk, while Zach Loewenberg also recorded two hits. Matthew Jones crossed the plate twice and Ryan Monson was 1 for 3 with a pair of walks.

Methodist returns to the diamond tomorrow against Washington and Lee to finish up the two-game series at Armstrong-Shelley Field at 4 pm.
