Guilford Holds Off MU Softball

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Methodist softball team came up short in a doubleheader at Guilford on Wednesday afternoon, dropping a pair of contests to the Quakers at Haworth Field.

Methodist (1-9) was shutout in the opener, 4-0, and dropped a 3-1 contest in the nightcap.

Brittany Jones (0-3) pitched for MU in the first game and allowed just four runs on nine hits without a walk while striking out four.

Makayla Carver put the Quakers on the board with a two-run home run in the third inning. Guilford (4-1) added to its lead with two runs in the fourth inning as Natalie Conrad recorded an RBI triple and Carver followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0.

The Monarchs, who banged out eight hits in the contest, put runners on first and second with one out in the fifth inning. After a ground out moved each runner into scoring position with two outs, GC's Courtney Lackey induced a short fly ball for the third out.

Methodist had one more shot in the ninth inning as singles from Ellie Gale and Searria Fisher gave MU a pair of runners with two outs, but Lackey was up to the task once again, getting a ground out to short to end the game.

Lackey did not give up a run on eight hits in 7.0 innings. She walked one and struck out two.

Savannah Dunn and Fisher each had a pair of base hits for MU.

In the nightcap, MU struck first with an unearned run in the first inning. With one out, Reagan Parks singled through the right side. Chloe Hespeler followed with a ground ball that resulted in an error on the Quakers and put two runners on with one out. A single from Gale loaded the bases and Kelsey Smith followed with a sacrifice fly to right that plated Parks and made it 1-0.

Guilford tied the game in the third inning on Delaney Taylor's RBI single and moved in front 2-1 in the fifth when Carver scored on a Sabrina Moreno base hit. The Quakers tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on an MU throwing error.

Fisher was saddled with the loss for MU, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Julie Gough picked up the win for Guilford, surrendering just an unearned run on six hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 7.0 innings.

Fisher was 2 for 4 in the contest to lead MU at the plate. Parks was 1 for 3 with a run scored, and Gale finished 1 for 2 with a walk.

Methodist will now get set for six games in three games this weekend, beginning with a 3 pm contest on Friday vs. Rowan in Cary, N.C.
