Guilford Knocks off MU Men's Lacrosse, 8-4

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist men's lacrosse team fell, 8-4, to Guilford on Wednesday afternoon at Monarch Stadium.
 
Four different players found the back of the net, and Clay Stevenson made 10 saves in the cage for MU (0-3). The Quakers (2-2) scored seven of their eight goals in the first half and took a 7-3 lead into the break.
 
Charlie Kiley's goal at the 12:19 of the first quarter opened the scoring for Guilford, but MU answered with AJ Mejia's tally at 10:53 to pull even at 1-1.
 
The Quakers closed the first quarter with two scores within two minutes of each other to take a 3-1 after one. Methodist's Luke Van der Muelen opened the second quarter with a clean face off win and ground ball. He carried the ball into the offensive zone and found Josh Brown on the crease for MU's second goal for a 3-2 contest just 17 seconds into the period.
 
The Quakers scored four of the next five goals, however, and pushed their lead to 7-3. George Faller scored two of the GC goals to close out the first half.
 
Zach Berkowitz scored GC's lone goal of the third quarter and Matt Layden scored for the Green & Gold as neither team scored in the fourth period.
 
Methodist held a 38-27 edge in shots, but GC was one up on MU in shots on goal, 18-17. The Monarchs committed 29 turnovers to Guilford's 27, and the Quakers held a 34-33 edge in ground balls. The Monarchs won 10 of 16 faceoffs.
 
In addition to his goal, Layden picked up six ground balls, as did Stevenson. Brown had four ground balls for the Monarchs, and Parke Kissner added three ground balls and added a pair of caused turnovers. Van der Muelen took every faceoff for MU, winning 10 of 16.
 
Faller finished with two goals and assist for GC, and Berkowitz had a goal and an assist. Tony Batchler caused four turnovers and Will Forrestal had seven ground balls.
 
The Monarchs return to action on Saturday at Brevard beginning at 1 pm.
