Monarch Men's Lax Muzzles Wolverines, 10-3

DOVER, Del. -- Clay Stevenson made nine saves in goal and the Methodist men's lacrosse team held Wesley scoreless for over 50 minutes in a 10-3 win on Saturday afternoon.

Matt Layden led the offense with five points on two goals and three assists, and Ian Mastriani and Cade  Crews contributed two goals and two assists apiece.

Will Fingles gave the Wolverines (1-4) a 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the contest, converting off a feed from Josh Wassum. Methodist would respond with an 8-0 scoring run, keeping Wesley off the scoreboard until the 6:31 mark of the fourth quarter.

Connor Glenn started the MU scoring at 11:52 of the first quarter, the first of five goals in the period for MU, to tie the game at 1-1. Layden took a feed from Crews and scored man-up at 6:34 for a 2-1 lead, and the Green & Gold tacked on three more goals in the final 4:55 for a 5-1 lead after the first.

Mastriani and Layden scored the only two goals of the second quarter pushing MU's lead to 7-1 at the break. Wesley managed to get off just three shots in the second quarter and only 10 total in the first half.

Wesley picked up the offensive pressure in the third quarter, logging 10 shots, but only three were on goal and Stevenson turned away all three.

Bryce Kephart scored a man-up goal at the 7:06 mark of the fourth quarter for an 8-1 lead before the Wolverines ended their dry spell with a goal from Joe Fingles with 6:31 to play. Crews and Andrew Mayefskie countered with goals 22 seconds apart to give MU a 10-2 lead with 4:09 to play, and Wassum capped the day's scoring with 55 seconds left for the 10-3 final.

Methodist outshot Wesley 37-25 despite winning just 6 of 17 faceoffs. The Wolverines also picked up 37 ground balls to 27 for MU, but the Monarchs held Wesley to an 0 for 5 mark with a man advantage, including 0 for 4 in the third quarter alone.

Layden added five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. AJ Mejia added three caused turnovers with four ground balls, and John Tartline scooped up three ground balls while causing four turnovers.

The Monarchs are back on the field next Saturday at 1 pm when they play host to Pfeiffer.
