Softball Splits Doubleheader with Ferrum

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist softball team split a doubleheader with Ferrum on Sunday afternoon at Price Field. The Monarchs won game one 4-3 and dropped game two 5-0.

Prior to the game, the Monarchs (7-12, 5-5 USA South) paid tribute to the lone senior on the team, Morgan Faircloth.

Miranda McKoy earned the win for MU in game one to improve to 3-0 on the season. She allowed three runs, all unearned, on five hits with a walk and a strikeout in 5.0 innings. Brittany Jones picked up the save with 2.0 innings of perfect relief. She struck out one.

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and MU quickly tied the game at 1-1 in the third on an RBI double by Faircloth. Ferrum once again moved in front, 2-1, on Bailey Oakes' RBI single before MU countered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-2 lead.

Ellie Gale singled with one out and was lifted for a pinch runner in the form of Reagan Parks. A walk to McKoy and a Faircloth single loaded the bases for Savannah Dunn. Dunn hit a sharp grounder to third which allowed the Panthers to force out Parks at home. With two outs, Searria Fisher hit a grounder to second that scored McKoy, and an error on the play allowed Faircloth to score to make it 3-2. Dunn then came home on a double steal attempt, crossing the plate before Fisher was tagged out in a rundown to make it 4-2.

The Panthers got a run back in the fifth inning to pull within one but MU held on for the win.

Fisher and Faircloth were each 2 for 3 at the plate. Fisher drove in one, while Faircloth drove in one and scored once. McKoy was 1 for with a walk and scored twice.

In game two, Jasmine Agee held the Monarchs to just one hit in 7.0 innings to improve to 4-3. She walked one and struck out four. Jordyn Propst started for MU and took the loss (2-3). She allowed five runs (2 ER) on six hits and a walk in 4.0 innings. Fisher pitched the final 3.0 innings, yielding just two hits with a walk and a strikeout.

The Monarchs play host to Randolph-Macon on Tuesday in a doubleheader beginning at 3 pm.
