Averett Takes Two from MU Softball

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Averett swept a softball doubleheader from the Methodist softball team on Friday afternoon.

Serving as the home team on MU's home field after weather forced a location change, the Cougars (9-17, 5-5 USA South) took game one, 12-0 in five innings, then captured a 10-2, five-inning win in the nightcap. Methodist fell to 7-23 overall and 5-7 in league play with the sweep.

Kaitlyn Aherron led AU to the win in game one. She started in the circle and limited MU to just two hits and a walk while striking out 10 in 5.0 innings. She was also 1 for 2 with a walk at the plate and scored twice while driving in two. Makenzie Collins was 3 for 3 with a pair of runs and drove in one.

Chloe Hespeler was 2 for 2 at the plate for MU. Jordyn Propst took the loss, allowing four runs on three hits without recording an out in the first inning.

In game two, the Monarchs jumped on top 2-0 in the first inning. Searria Fisher singled to lead off the contest for MU, and Carleigh Haywood followed with an RBI triple after falling behind in the count, 0-2. With one out, Kesley Smith reached on an error by Averett's second baseman which allowed Haywood to race home with the second run.

Averett stormed back for four runs in the second inning to take a 4-2 lead. A single run in the third inning followed by four in the fourth put the score at 9-2. The Cougars scored the clinching run on an error with two outs in the fifth.

Haywood was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run for MU. Miranda McKoy started in the circle and took the loss, allowing five runs (1 ER) on five hits and a walk in 3.0 innings.
