Methodist Softball Splits with Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Methodist softball team split a USA South doubleheader with Greensboro at Latham Park on Wednesday.

The Monarchs (8-26, 6-8 USA South) took the first game in extra innings, 4-3, before the Pride (15-19, 5-9) came back with a six-inning 8-0 win in the nightcap.

In the first contest of the twinbill, GC struck first with a run in the bottom of the first. The Pride led off the frame with a single and moved to third on an error before crossing home plate on a wild pitch, 1-0. The slim lead held until Seairra Fisher led off the third inning with a solo homer to left-center field, 1-1.

MU scored twice in the fifth inning as Fisher and Carleigh Haywood each singled. The two moved up a bag as Chloe Hespeler laid down a sacrifice bunt and both scored on a two-run single by Kelsey Smith, 3-1. The advantage did not last for long as the Pride tied the game in the following half inning after tallying three-straight singles and took advantage of a throwing error to tie the contest at 3-3.

The score held until the eighth inning as Fisher reached base on a two-out single. A miss-played fly ball by the right fielder allowed Fisher to come around and score as MU took a 4-3 lead, which held through the home half of the frame.

Fisher was 3 for 5 at the plate with a homer, an RBI and three runs scored, while Haywood finished 3 for 5 as well. For the Pride, Jasmine Worthy was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and Hayley Tickle also recorded a pair of hits.

Miranda McKoy (4-1) tossed all 8.0 innings and surrendered three runs (1 ER) on 11 hits with three strikeouts to record the victory. Maddy Wetherholt (8-8) was saddled with the loss after yielding four runs (3 ER) on 10 hits and three walks in 7.0 innings.

In game two, Greensboro took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and added another run in the second. The Pride plated two runs in the fourth and scored once in the fifth and sixth frames to reach the 8-0 final.

Fisher registered the lone hit for the Monarchs. She also took the loss after giving up three runs in 1.0 inning of work.

Methodist returns to the field on Friday, March 30, against Pfeiffer in a doubleheader beginning at 2 pm at Price Field.
