Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader from Battling Bishops

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The 20th-ranked Methodist baseball team improved to 13-2 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of N.C. Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon.

Will May hit a go-ahead home run in the top of the ninth inning of the opener to break a 4-4 tie as MU would eventually win 6-2, and the Monarchs completed the sweep with an 11-6 win in the nightcap.

Methodist took an early 4-0 lead, getting a single run in the first inning and three more in the second. Matthias Carter scored on a double-play in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Clay Richardson singled home Jacob Austin in the second to make it 2-0, and Alex Kachler followed with an RBI single that plated Carter once again as MU went up 3-0. A wild pitch allowed Richardson to come around to score and make the score 4-0.

The Battling Bishops pulled even with three runs in the bottom of the second and another in the bottom of the third to knot the score a 4-4.

In the ninth, May led off with his second home run of the season to put MU on top 5-4. A throwing error by the Bishops put runners on the corners with one out, and a squeeze bunt from Parker Clayton allowed Davis Cass to race home with an insurance run, 6-4.

Tristen Luck started for MU, but allowed three runs on five hits and three walks in 1.1 innings. Logan Haines tossed 6.0 innings of relief, yielding just one runs on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Will Walker picked up the win (1-0) with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

May finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run. Austin was 2 for 4 with a run, and Carter was 1 for 4 with a pair of walks.

In the nightcap, the Monarchs rallied from a 4-3 deficit with seven runs in the sixth inning, taking advantage of three NCWC miscues in the field.

Kachler and May led off with back-to-back singles and Criswell laid down a sacrifice bunt but reached on an error to load the bases. A double off the bat of Davis Cass scored Kachler and May and put MU on top 5-4.

With one out, Clayton laid down another bunt as MU traded a run for an out and went up 6-4. Eliot Manley then singled home Cass, stole second and scored on a triple by Carter to make it 7-4. Another NCWC error allowed Richardson to reach and Carter to score for an 8-4 game. Kachler, batting for the second time in the inning, drove in Richardson with a base hit to cap put MU firmly in control 9-4.
