LAGRANGE, Ga. -- Methodist fell to Huntingdon 12-4 in the inaugural USA South Men's Lacrosse Championship Game on Sunday afternoon at Callaway Stadium.

The Monarchs now boast a 6-9 overall record while the Hawks stand at 16-2.

Methodist's
Matt Layden gave the Monarchs a 2-1 after the first quarter with a pair of early goals. He opened the scoring with an unassisted tally at the 13:15 mark, then broke a 1-1 tie with six seconds left in the period with another solo effort for a 2-1 lead after one.

The Hawks answered with seven straight goals over the second quarter and into the third to assume a 7-3 lead with 1:27 left in the period.
Bryce Kephart broke MU's long scoring drought, taking a feed from
Austin Stewart and beating Matt Murphy with eight seconds left.

In the fourth, the Hawks opened with four goals for an 11-3 lead with 3:51 to play.
Ian Mastriani scored the Monarchs' final goal with 3:12 to play off a feed from
AJ Mejia.

The Hawks outshot MU 53-20 overall and 29-13 on goal.
Clay Stevenson made 17 saves for the Monarchs, while Murphy, who was named the Tournament MVP, made nine saves for the Hawks.

Layden was named to the All-Tournament team, as were
Brendan Siemen and
John Tartline. Layden added three ground balls to his pair of goals.
Josh Brown had a pair of caused turnovers and
AJ Mejia picked up three ground balls.

The Monarchs have one final game this season, playing at Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday beginning at 5 pm.
