ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. --
Madison Ronelli tied the USA South Athletic Conference single-game records for goals and points in leading the Methodist women's lacrosse team to a 28-1 win at N.C. Wesleyan on Tuesday afternoon at Scalf Field.
Â
Ronelli poured in 11 goals and added four assists for a total of 15 points to tie both the school and conference records for goals and points in a game. She ties former Monarch Cassie Walter, who also totaled 15 points on 11 goals and four assists against N.C. Wesleyan on March 28, 2014. The 28 goals by MU also sets a school record, eclipsing the 27 goals scored against Hollins in a 27-6 win last season.
Â
In addition to Ronelli's 15 points,
Sydney Bonner (2g/3a),
Monti Hendrix (5g) and
Kaelyn Holland (3g/2a) all contributed five points in the dominating win. The Monarchs (6-7, 5-2 USA South) outshot the Battling Bishops (1-13, 0-7) 51-11 and held a 23-7 edge in draw controls.
Â
It took the Green & Gold just 15 seconds to get on the board as Ronelli opened the scoring with her first goal of the contest, and MU led 5-0 less than five minutes into the game. Following a nearly six-minute scoreless stretch for both teams, the Monarchs pumped in six goals in a span of 4:03 to go up 11-0 on Holland's goal off a feed from Ronelli at the 15:46 mark of the first half.
Â
Four more first half goals from the Monarchs gave MU a 15-0 lead at halftime. Holland opened the scoring in the second half 39 seconds into the period before the Bishops' Alexandra Cucinotta got the home team on the board at the 27:23 mark.
Â
The Monarchs hit the 20-goal mark with 21:20 left to play and Ronelli added five goals down the stretch in the win.
Â
Hendrix and Ronelli each had seven draw controls for MU, and
Sarah Ewin added five draw controls, three caused turnovers and five ground balls.
Emily Brennen also had five ground balls while securing three draw controls.
Â
Molly O'Hara played all 60:00 for MU in the cage and made four saves, while Ashlee Johnson made 11 saves for the Bishops.
