2018 Methodist Hall of Fame Class Announced

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist University Department of Athletics announced its 2018 Athletics Hall of Fame Class on Tuesday, as well as two Teams of Distinction.

Highlighted by the induction of former men's basketball coach and long-time Director of Athletics Bob McEvoy, the 2018 Hall of Fame Class also includes standout men's golfer Adam Horton '06, and women's soccer pioneer Brenda McKimens Case '87. The two Teams of Distinction are the 1986 baseball team, and the 1987-88 cheerleading squad.

McEvoy enters the Hall of Fame in his first year on the ballot following 25 years of service to the University, including 19 as the director of athletics. Prior to taking over the top position in the department, McEvoy served as the men's basketball coach for seven seasons, compiling a record of 88-85. During the 1996-97 season, he led the Monarchs to a 22-8 record, conference regular season and tournament championships, and a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight. That year, his team set an MU record with 20 consecutive wins, and he was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches South Region Coach of the Year. Additionally, he was a two-time conference Coach of the Year in 1997 and 1999.

As AD, McEvoy helped steer an MU athletic department that captured 15 NCAA National Championships and 13 other top-5 finishes in NCAA Championship competition. The Monarchs brought home the Conference's Overall Presidents Cup for athletic excellence on five different occasions, including a run of three straight from 2013-2016. Methodist won 100 conference championships since 1998, more than any other member of the conference.

He helped with the expansion of the department, bringing in both men's and women's lacrosse and ensured the Monarchs maintained a national presence with the NCAA. During his time at MU, McEvoy served on the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball National Committee, the NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Committee, he served as the tournament director for such events as the Men's and Women's NCAA Division III Golf Championships (2009, 2013), NCAA Division III Softball South Regionals (2007, 2008), NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship (2005), NCAA Division III Baseball South Regionals (2010) and served as a facilitator for the NCAA Division III National Regional Leadership Conferences from 2005-08. At the conference level, he served as the president of the conference from 2005-07, and again from 2016 until his retirement.

Horton enters as one of the Monarchs' most decorated men's golfers. A four-time First Team All-American, he was the individual champion of the USA South three years straight from 2004-06. Twice he was named the USA South Men's Golfer of the Year (04, 06), and he was picked as the league's top rookie in 2003. The Monarchs captured four straight USA South Conference Championships during his time, and three times he finished in the top five individually at the NCAA Championships, including a third-place finish in 2004, the same year that he brought home the University's Mason Sykes Cup.

McKimens Case is the final individual to be inducted and she proved an important figure in the early days of women's soccer at Methodist. A member of the first team at Methodist, McKimens Case helped those early Monarch squads to an overall record of 36-25-2 en route to three conference championships and the first two NCAA Tournament berths in program history in 1986 and 1987. Following each of those seasons she was named a Second Team All-American, and she added a trio of first team all-conference nods over the course of her career, and to this day she still holds the single-game assist record (4) for MU.

The 1986 baseball team enters as a Team of Distinction, becoming the second baseball team to earn the honor. The '86 squad was the first to reach the 40-win plateau and posted a final record of 43-6. The 43 wins stand as a school record for single-season victories, and the team won the NCAA South Region and advanced to the College World Series. Three Monarchs were named All-Americans at the end of the season, including first team selection Dan Hartline. Tom Austin was named the Conference Coach of the Year and had five players named first team all-conference performers.

The final team chosen was the 1987-88 cheerleading team that finished in fourth place at the NCA National Collegiate Cheer Championship in the combined division. Under the direction of Gwen Holtsclaw, herself a member of the Methodist Athletics Hall of Fame, the Monarchs were the highest-ranked Division III cheer team in the country and became the first MU team to qualify for the NCA Collegiate Championships, let alone place.

The three individuals as well as the two teams will be formally inducted in a ceremony on Friday, Oct. 19, as part of the University's Homecoming Weekend. If you would like to purchase a ticket to attend the banquet, call the Methodist Athletic Department at 910-630-7175.
