STAUNTON, Va. Methodist extended a set-winning streak into the second match of the day at Mary Baldwin University's Physical Activities Center, but the string ended during a loss to Meredith College that left Monarchs volleyball with a split Saturday in a USA South tri-match.
The opening match against the host Fighting Squirrels ended with a 3-0 sweep for Methodist, which had rallied from an 0-2 deficit Friday night at Eastern Mennonite University before reeling off three straight to win the improbable come-back.
Saturday's second match was against preseason conference favorite Meredith, against whom the Monarchs were able to stretch their set-winning streak to seven by taking the opening set against the Avenging Angels, 25-16.
Meredith bounced back, however, to ring up three straight and end the Monarch string of good fortune.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Methodist dominated the opening set against Mary Baldwin, needing only one lead change very early in the set to eventually roll to the win. However, the second set proved to be more of a battle with the Fighting Squirrels.
- In that set there were 10 ties and four lead changes before Brittany Ter Meer knocked down a kill for the 24th point then served for the winning point.
- The final set saw just a single lead change, at 5-4 with Megan Andrews serving, and the Squirrels never got closer than two points the rest of the match.
- An early run when trailing 3-2 spurred Methodist to its opening-set win against Meredith in the next match of the day.
- Jasmine Scott earned the penultimate point in the set with a solo block, then clinched the set win with a kill off a set from Lily Henry.
- Just as dominant in a set victory were the Avenging Angels in the second set. Methodist led 2-0 but Meredith counted off nine consecutive points to take control and even the match.
- Though the fourth set was just as taut, registering the same number of tie scores (eight) and lead changes (three), the third set likely mattered the most in determining the match victor.
- The teams traded points through the early and middle stages of the match, but with Meredith holding on to a tenuous lead.
- A kill from Jamie Jones evened the score, 13-13, for the first time since at 1-1. A Jones kill squared the match at 15-15 as well, and from there it was a knock-down, drag-out fight to the finish.
- A Ter Meer kill when tied at 23-23 provided Methodist with its first lead of the set, but Meredith picked up the tying point on a Monarch attacking error.
- Erica East answered, though, with a kill of her own to edge Methodist back out in front, only to have the Angels string together a kill, a service ace, and another kill to outlast the Monarchs.
- Fighting to extend the match, Methodist led early (2-0 and 6-1) in the fourth set, and led through the middle points of the set until Meredith seized the advantage at 19-18.
- Trailing 24-23, Methodist fought off one match point with a Tapscott kill, another match point at 25-24 with a Jones kill, and yet another at 26-25 on a Ter Meer knock down. But the Angels moved in front at 27-26 with a kill from Caroline Corey, then clinched the match on a block from Haley Reeg and Samanthat Smith.
- For the afternoon, Ter Meer totaled 24 kills, 12 in each match, to lead the Methodist attack. Tapscott added 23 (11 and 12), with East racking up 18 kills.
- Henry continues her assault on her personal record book. After notching a single-match career high 44 set assists in the 3-2 victory against Eastern Mennonite, she set a new personal high -- the fifth time she has done so this season -- with 45 assists in the match against Meredith. She earlier on Saturday propped up 40 assists against Mary Baldwin.
- Defensively for Methodist on the afternoon, Andrews led the team at floor level with a total of 41 digs, while Tapscott led the defense at the net with 2.5 blocks.
