MONTGOMERY, Ala. Goalkeeper
Scott Brecke finished with a blank sheet and three different Monarchs netted goals Sunday afternoon as Methodist downed host Huntingdon College, 3-0, in men's USA South Athletic Conference men's soccer action.
Nick Bryant's goal just 93 seconds into the contest proved to be the game winner, but Brecke's five saves kept the Hawks from mounting any type of comeback.
JUST THE FACTS
Final result: Methodist def. Huntingdon, 3-0
Records: Methodist 5-3 (2-1 USA South); Hungingdon 2-7 (1-3 USA South)
Location: Samford Complex, Montgomery, Ala.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first shot of the game turned into the first goal of the contest as Bryant took a feed from Yazeed Alshamekh and buried a shot behind Hawks goalie Zak Heino at the 1:33 mark.
- Bryant almost doubled up his afternoon in the 13th minute but Heino was able to come up with the save on that shot.
- Huntingdon nearly tied the game in the 21st with a shot that clanged off a post, only to have the Monarchs eventually transition down field and add a goal for more breathing room.
- Hugo Kamppainen received a pass from Conor Morris and slotted a shot past Heino to double the Methodist lead in the 23rd.
- Bryant kept finding chances in the attacking third, pasting a shot off the crossbar late in the 28th minute.
- Methodist finished the opening half with a 2-0 lead, and a 6-5 advantage in shots.
- Second-half action was livelier than the first as both teams built shot totals, 11 each, that equaled the combined shot total of the squads in the initial 45 minutes.
- Heino came up with a pair of saves within the opening 10 minutes of the second half, followed by a 10-minute stint of Hawk pressure that forced Brecke to come up with two saves that kept the home team from impacting the scoreboard.
- It was a Brecke save late in the 61st that helped initiate another Methodist transition. Bryant nearly finished off the rush only to have Heino add another save. But the net minder wasn't able to keep control of his save and Noah Lunsford was in the right spot at the right time to collect the loose ball and one-time a shot past Heino to add a third marker for the Monarchs.
- A red card against Huntingdon just before that Brecke save and Lunsford goal handcuffed the Hawks on the attack. Playing a man down they generated only two more shots in the game, one wide of the frame and the other a Brecke save in the 83rd.
BEYOND THE BOX(SCORE)
- All three Methodist goals were season firsts for Bryan, Kamppainen and Lunsford.
- Bryant's game-winner was his second career goal, while Kamppainen's and Lunsford's were their first collegiate markers.
- Brecke's five saves ties his career high, set Saturday in a game at LaGrange College.
HAWK NOTES
