JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist tie vs. Piedmont, 2-2
Records: Methodist 5-3-1 overall, 2-1-1 USA South; Brevard 7-1-2 overall, 5-0-2 USA South
Location: Monarch SoccerPlex; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Conor Morris and Nick Bryant both saw their penalty kicks get saved by the Lions' goalkeeper Blayton Duncan.
  • Morris was awarded the penalty shot in the 29th minute. Following the penalty miss, the Lions' responded with a fast counter attack that saw Cameron Earls score his 14th goal of the season in a header over the Monarchs' goalkeeper.
  • It was Bryant's penalty shot that was a heartbreaker as it would have been a game winner five minutes into the first overtime penalty. On the rebound immediately after the penalty shot, Itoua's shot sailed too high from an open goal.
  • Bryant was aggressive all day long and he earned an assist when he delivered a perfect cross to Itoua, who tapped the ball into the right corner for the first goal of the game.
  • It was a pretty even affair as Piedmont shot 13 times and Methodist shot 12 times. Methodist, however, held the edge on shots on goal with nine to six.
  • The physical nature of the match led to the referee assessing a yellow card to Piedmont's Renzo Cattaneo and Methodist's Yazeed Alshamekh late in the first half.
  • It got dangerous in the second half for Scott Brecke as Cameron Earls missed what would have been a breakaway goal by sending the ball too far left of the goal. Later, an Ian Addison header hit crossbar.
  • Garrett Moore subbed into the game and promptly scored off of a corner kick from Jose Linares to give the Lions a brief lead.
  • A very brief lead, as in less than a minute before Methodist blitzed with a counter attack that saw Garrett Shan tie up the game with a goal of his own. All four of Shan's shots were on goal, which was a game-high.
  • The Monarchs' defense was positioned well all day as they did a good job of heading the seven Lions' corner kicks and numerous free kicks out of harm's way.

LIONS PROWL
  • Duncan was excellent all day, as he earned seven saves, including the two big saves against the penalty kicks.
  • With his 14 goals on the season, Earls is atop the entire conference in goals scored. He has six more goals than anybody else in the conference.
  • Along with Earls leading the conference in goals scored, Jose Linares leads in assists as he added another assist to his totals to give him eight on the year.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Piedmont still has yet to lose in conference play, with a record of five wins and two draws.
  • This was Methodist's first draw of the season. They are 1-1-1 in games that goes into overtime.
  • The Monarchs have not lost to Piedmont this decade. With this tie, that still holds true.
