Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Falls to Visiting Scots

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist was looking to earn USA South Conference points Saturday under the lights at the Monarch Soccerplex, but visiting Covenant College scored the game's first three goals then belayed Methodist's attempts at a comeback in downing the Monarchs, 5-1.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Covenant def. Methodist, 5-1
Records: Methodist 5-4-1 (2-2-1 USA South); Covenant 8-5-1 (5-2-1 USA South)
Location: Monarch Soccerplex; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist registered the first scoring opportunity of the game as Tyler Hinton put one on frame in the eighth minute only to have Covenant goalkeeper Paul Lemay come up with the stop.
  • The Scots accumulated some possession time in their attacking third after the Hinton near-goal and finally broke through with a Parker Owen marker in the 15th.
  • Lemay came up big again while clinging to the one-goal advantage, stopping Kyle Madden's shot on goal in the 23rd, and then Nick Bryant's shot in the 27th.
  • Just before halftime, though, the Scots would double their lead with a tally from Josh Brower only 74 seconds before the halftime break.
  • A Covenant goal in the 57th provided the visitors with a 3-0 bulge and allowed the Scots' defense to play even more cautiously against a now desperate Methodist attack.
  • That desperation paid off in the 60th for the Monarchs. Garrett Shan's shot was blocked in the box but Lawson Lamm was able to eventually collect the loose ball and feed Kristoffer Skarstein, who knocked home a shot that trimmed the deficit to just two goals.
  • The lead jumped back to three, however, on an unfortunate own goal five minutes later, then grew once again with Jake Major's goal one minute later.
  • Methodist threw everything into its attack at that point and peppered Lemay with three consecutive shots in the 68th and 69th minutes, but the Scots' keeper was sound in his defense and eliminated any possible damage.
  • Overall the teams both ended up accruing 13 shots in the contest, with Methodist actually getting more of those shots, 7, on frame than did Covenant (6).

COVENANT NOTES
  • Parker Owen scored two goals on two shots for the Scots.
  • Lemay finished the contest with six saves.
