FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. First-half action Tuesday evening saw Methodist battling right alongside visiting Barton College, an in-state NCAA Division II institution. But the Bulldogs grew meaner in the second half, scoring three goals to turn what had been a slim one-goal edge over the D-III Monarchs into a 4-0 non-conference women's soccer victory over Methodist in its home opener.
JUST THE FACTS
Final Score: Barton 4 – Methodist 0
Records: Methodist 2-1, Barton 2-0
Location: Monarch Soccerplex, Fayetteville, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Though Barton got off the initial shot of the game, saved by Methodist goalie Maggie Hunt, it was the Monarchs that created sustained pressure their next time downfield. Capri Clark snapped off a shot that was blocked and deflected over the end line early in the 24th minute, creating a corner kick opportunity. That set piece resulted in a Gillian Niesel shot that Barton netminder Megan Bolick was forced to come up with.
- The Bulldogs were growing in finding ways to dial up some pressure after Niesel's shot, tallying four shots against just one by Methodist over the next 13 minutes. It was a Laisy Scardazzi shot from the far right of the Methodist goal that finally found a home behind Hunt to lift the Bulldogs into the lead at the 42-minute mark of the half.
- Barton came out of the halftime recess and immediately found a more organized attack, putting four shots toward the Methodist frame. When Syaani Harris scored for the Bulldogs at 63:20 it was if the dam burst, as Scardazzi and then Jordyn Brown added goals for a three-goal burst in 10 minutes of action.
- Neisel had a brief breakaway in the 57th but her scoring opportunity was blocked away. That would be the last shot from the Monarchs until Bella Nunu's header off a corner chance in the 77th.
- Methodist found a way to dial up its intensity over the final 14 minutes, racking up five more shots -- to only one from the Bulldogs -- after Nunu's header attempt.
