Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Finishing off a victory

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  With only a one-goal halftime lead -- off a penalty kick -- the Methodist attack needed to get on track in the second half Saturday night against visiting Marymount (Va.) University in non-conference men's soccer action at the Monarch Soccerplex.

The closing game of the first of two days of Monarch Classic had been tilted Methodist's way for most of the opening 45 minutes, but only Conor Morris' converted PK try had moved the scoreboard.

Finally, though, Oxie Itoua scored in the 78th followed by Yazeed Alshamekh's tally in the 82nd to provide the Monarch with a 3-0 shutout victory over the Saints.

JUST THE FACTS
Final Score: Methodist def. Marymount, 3-0
Records: Methodist 2-2 overall, Marymount 0-4 overall
Event: Monarch Soccer Classic
Location: Monarch Soccerplex, Fayetteville, N.C.
Other results from the Classic: Pfeiffer def. Frostburg State, 5-1, on Saturday

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The opening goal game late in the 21st minute when Honore Nshimiye was fouled in the box on a yellow card to Christian Umañ. Conor Morris was selected to take the PK and buried a hard shot into the left side while Saints goalkeeper Ronald Clark leaped to the right.
  • Methodist had a strong control on possession during the opening 45 minutes, but Marymount would find bursts throughout, resulting in just a 6-5 edge in total shots for the Monarchs by the halftime break.
  • Methodist flirted with a second goal five minutes into the second half, gaining three corner kick opportunities and getting off three shots to no avail.
  • Clinging to its tenuous one-goal edge, Methodist finally gained breathing room on a scramble within the framework of the Saints' goal. Eventually the ball found the foot of Morris inside the right post and in close, where he tapped a pass across to the left where Oxie Itoua was clear of his defender for the second goal of the contest.
  • Shortly after the second yellow of the night on the Saints, the Monarchs generated another scoring opportunity deep in Marymount territory. Near the top, right corner of the box was Alshamekh who collected a pass with his back to the goal and defender, juked inside then back out to gain space from his defender and two steps later launched a shot past Clark for the game's third score.
  • Methodist finished the contest with a 14-7 edge in shots, but more importantly, a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal.

BEYOND THE STATS
  • Saturday's win marks the third consecutive shutout victory over Marymount by the Monarchs. In 2016 Methodist won 2-0, and last season the Monarchs earned a 1-0 victory.
  • Marymount's attack has yet to get untracked this season, scoring only one time in four losses.
