HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ahead 24-22 and serving for the set, the Monarchs were simply unable to find that elusive winning point, giving up four unanswered points to the Spirits.
- Methodist had leaped in front, 4-0, to start the set, then late in the game owned leads of 23-20 and 24-22.
- That momentum swing seemed to carry over into the next set, in which Methodist never led. It had gained some footing, climbing to within four points at 17-13, but Salem reeled off an 8-0 string to close out the set and push another set victory up onto the scoreboard.
- Credit to the Monarchs, though, as they pulled up the bootstraps to challenge the Spirits across the entirety of the third set.
- Early leads of 3-1, 5-2 and 7-5 gave way to a Salem run that wrested back its advantage with five unanswered points to go up 10-7.
- Methodist trailed by five or six points for a lengthy time after that lead exchange, but used a 5-0 run themselves to inch within a point of the Spirits at 21-20.
- Salem crept out to a 23-21 lead but Jamie Jones' consecutive kills off Savannah Mullis set assists drew the Monarchs even at 23-23. The Spirts, however, were able to close out the set, and match, with two final points.
