Battling Bishops Escape Battling Monarchs in Season Finale

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The Methodist men's soccer had a tough draw for its regular season finale with N.C. Wesleyan College coming into town to close out the Monarchs' 2019 season. The Battling Bishops, the top team in the East Division of the USA South Athletic Conference, narrowly escaped with a 2-1 win over Methodist in conference play Saturday evening.

In the 69th minute, Kether Fouana-Seth scored his first collegiate goal to make it a one-score game and give the Monarchs a chance at forcing overtime. Goalkeeper Cole Hupp was outstanding, earning seven saves and making multiple goal-saving plays and clears to keep N.C. Wesleyan from being able to widen its lead further.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: N.C. Wesleyan def. Methodist, 2-1
Records: Methodist 4-11-1 (2-10-1 USA South), N.C. Wesleyan 14-2 (12-1)
Location: Monarch SoccerPlex; Fayetteville, N.C.
Event: Senior Night

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 12 SECONDS. Fouana-Seth and Tyler Hinton were on the pitch for 12 seconds before they put the Monarchs on the board. Hinton assisted (his first collegiate assist) and Fouana-Seth scored. Hinton received a pass from a throw-in and quickly crossed it high into the box to Fouana-Seth, who rose above the defenders and footed the ball in for a goal. Can you find a faster goal and assist by two substitutes?
  • Following Fouana-Seth's goal to make it a one-score game, the Monarchs were able to put up five shots as potential equalizers but they were unable to put any on target. Methodist's best chances to tie came via a Collin Hinnant shot that was blocked following a corner kick and a Lawson Lamm shot that went wide following a free kick.
  • The Monarchs closed the difference in the second half, actually outshooting the Bishops 8-7 in the final frame.
  • N.C. Wesleyan scored in the 3rd minute of the game after being awarded a penalty kick. Matteo Costa was just barely able to sneak the ball past goalie Cole Hupp for the score.
  • Mo Jalloh's shot was blocked following a corner kick but the deflection landed right in the area of Jack Holden, who instantly redirected the shot for another Bishops goal in the 36th minute.
  • N.C. Wesleyan's aggression almost hurt them dearly as five Bishops were given yellow cards and they racked up 17 fouls. That gifted the Monarchs with multiple advantageous free kicks.
  • The team's eight total saves is a tied for this season's best.

SENIOR NIGHT
Before the game, the Monarchs honored their two seniors -- Lawson Lamm and Garrett Shan. The duo has combined for 86 games, 52 starts, nine goals, and seven assists.

FINAL TALLY
  • Rylan Hoerning's five goals led the team this season.
  • Charlie Teachey and his three assists are a team-high.
  • Trent Powell delivered with timely goals. Two of his four goals were game-winners, a team-high.
  • Cole Hupp earned 63 saves in his 15 games as goalie.
