Gay, Nunu score for Monarchs in Loss at Meredith

RALEIGH, N.C.  Miranda Gay scored shortly before halftime to send Methodist into the break with a one-goal advantage, but host Meredith scored in the 70th and 81st minutes to rally for a 3-2 USA South Athletic Conference women's soccer victory Saturday evening.

The Monarchs' Bella Nunu had opened the scoring in the 17th, with her fourth goal of the season, only to have the Avenging Angels knock in an equalizing marker nine minutes later.

Though a conference loss for Methodist, it had already cemented a spot in the USA South's postseason tournament and will host William Peace University Wednesday in a first-round matchup.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Meredith def. Methodist, 3-2
Records: Methodist 7-6-1 (4-3-1 USA South), Meredith 6-11 (5-3)
Location: Meredith Athletic Fields; Raleigh, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nunu's unassisted goal was a rocket from the top of the box. She'd collected a pass just above the arc from Haley Bowles, then maneuvered to the right around a Meredith defender, drawing goalkeeper Miranda Lutz in that direction. After clearing her defender, with another bearing down from the left, Nunu put a right foot into a shot that crossed to the back post and into the upper, left corner.
  • After Meredith had knotted the score in the 26th, it was Gay who put the Monarchs back in front with a Beckham-like shot that curled around a defender before it caromed off the upper part of the right post and then behind a helpless Lutz.
  • Gay had taken possession from Haley Jones and pushed toward the box, but dished off a short pass to her left to Kiley Way. The one-touch return to Gay allowed her to clear a defender and rip a shot with her right foot for a go-ahead marker.
  • Methodist toted that 2-1 lead and a 9-5 advantage in total shots into recess, but Meredith turned the tables in the second half, scoring on two of its shots on goal, and finishing the second half with a 9-7 edge in shots.
  • Mia Slaunwhite picked a good time to score her first goals of the season for the Avenging Angels, evening the game at 2-2 at the 69:38 mark, then scoring the game-winner at the 80:09 mark off a corner kick that curled its way across the goal line.
  • Lutz played solidly between the pipes for Meredith, keeping the home team in the game with nine saves. Maggie Hunt had started in goal for Methodist and collected four saves over the initial 45 minutes, before ceding the spot to Mary Newman at the start of the second half. Newman finished the night with three saves.

TOURNAMENT TIME
  • The top six teams in each division qualify for the USA South postseason, but with regular-season East Division leader Pfeiffer University ineligible as it finishes its reclassification to Division III, the top two seeds and first-round byes in the East go to Greensboro College and Salem College.
  • Methodist will enter the postseason as the No. 4 seed, squaring off Wednesday against fifth-seeded William Peace.
  • The other first-round East matchup is between third-seeded Meredith and No. 6 seed N.C. Wesleyan College.
  • Methodist defeated William Peace, 2-0, the last time the teams played, on October 12 at the Monarch SoccerPlex, the same site for Wednesday's rematch.
