FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. In the first round of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament, Methodist women's soccer blanked visiting William Peace University, 1-0, Wednesday evening.
It was a game in which a one-goal deficit felt insurmountable behind the Monarchs' smothering defense and continuous attack. The Monarchs bombarded the Pacers with 27 shots, 12 on goal, compared to just two shots (and one on target) from William Peace.
Laura Harris' goal, with an assist from
Haley Bowles, in the 14th minute stood as the game winner to advance Methodist into the quarterfinals where it will face the No. 1 seed in the West Division, host Maryville (Tenn.) College on Saturday, November 2 at 2 p.m.

Final score: Methodist def. William Peace, 1-0
Records: Methodist 8-6-1, William Peace 7-10-1
Location: Monarch SoccerPlex; Fayetteville, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Methodist dominated from the very beginning, putting up eight shots (four on target) before Bowles' through ball found a sprinting Harris for the score. Through the first 45 minutes, the Monarchs owned a 19-2 advantage in shots taken and a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.
- Methodist was presented with numerous good looks and shots but credit Pacers' keeper Kasey Wilkins and her 11 saves, which kept William Peace in the game.
- The Pacers presented only one shot on frame and Maggie Hunt earned the relatively easy save in the 36th minute.
- Hunt was more active in the last five minutes as a frantic William Peace team just narrowly missed on putting a corner on target and later, Hunt had to show off her 40-yard dash by beating an unmarked attacker to the ball.
- Aiden Sherry with five shots taken was a team-high, and Haley Jones' and Tatiana Lourenco-Shiber's three shots on goal each led the team.
- The Monarchs had a 65-35% edge in possession time.
