GREENSBORO, N.C. Methodist's third conference game of the season was a nail biter as it went to war in a 1-1 double-overtime draw against the Greensboro Pride Saturday in USA South action.
The Pride would dominate the statistics sheet, but second-half goals in the 59th and 76th minutes would be the only scoring in the taut contest.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist ties Greensboro, 1-1 OT2
Records: Methodist 4-4-1 (1-1-1 USA South), Greensboro 8-3-1 (2-0-1)
Location: Pride Field; Greensboro, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Maggie Hunt had a great first half in goal as she helped the Monarchs hold off the attacking Pride by coming up with four saves. Her afternoon would get busier in the second half, though, as she needed to add seven more saves to keep Methodist in the game.
- With no action from the attack over the opening 45 minutes, the Monarch offense would come out more aggressively in the second half. And just 13 minutes after the halftime break it was Miranda Gay who would break the scoreless deadlock.
- Laura Harris had taken a shot from within the box that was blocked by a Greensboro defender, and it was Gay who corralled the loose rock and pushed her own shot into the netting in the 59th minute.
- Methodist generated the next two shots without luck, leading to a long shot from the Pride's Katia Meszey, who slipped her shot past Hunt and inside the far post for the equalizer in the 76th.
- Greensboro took over possession following that tying goal, generating nine shots -- four of which needed Hunt saves -- compared to one shot, on goal, by the Monarchs over the final 14 minutes of regulation.
- The two overtime periods tilted back Methodist's way as all four its shots required saves from Greensboro goalkeeper Kelsey Emrich. Hunt, on the other hand, wasn't as pressured as each of the Pride's four shots in the two periods were off target.
GAME NOTES
- Greensboro's shots advantage billowed to a 28-10 advantage, including a 12-6 doubling of shots on frame.
- Likewise, set pieces from the corners were also in the Pride's favor, 8-4.
- While Greensboro was whistled for twice as many fouls as would be Methodist, 9 to 5, each of the four yellow cards issued were against Methodist.
