Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Monarchs Roll to 7-0 Victory

STAUNTON, Va.  Visiting Methodist notched a 7-0 USA South Athletic Conference women's soccer victory Sunday afternoon over host Mary Baldwin University, jumping to a two-goal lead in the opening 11 minutes on goals from freshman Laura Harris.

Haley Bowles scored once in each half, and the Monarchs added goals from Gillian Niesel, Sierra Swasey and Kiley Way to build the cushion to seven.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Mary Baldwin, 7-0
Records: Methodist 5-4-1 (2-1-1 USA South), Mary Baldwin 3-8 (0-3)
Location: SMA Worth Field; Staunton, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • What would prove to be the game-winning goal was a thing of beauty from within Methodist's own defensive half. Bella Nunu saucered a pass toward the left touch line where Miranda Gay, from just inside the midline, one-touch volleyed a through ball into the center of the attacking half for Harris. She drew the MBU goalkeeper to the right then launched a crossing shot inside the back post to open the scoring just seconds into the fourth minute.
  • Harris added her second goal on another through ball, this one coming from Aiden Sherry who split the MBU defenders with her pass. Harris collected the opportunity, again drew the keeper to the right, and again crossed her shot back behind the goalie and inside the left post, doubling the Monarchs' advantage in the 11th minute of the contest.
  • Bowles scored off an assist from Sherry in the 23rd to add to the first-half total, and Way, with an assist by Sallee Jones, closed out the scoring before recess.
  • An late offsides call disallowed a goal two minutes into second-half action, but Bowles knocked in one that did count on the scoreboard at the 51:45 mark.
  • Continued pressure by the Methodist attack added a sixth goal less than a minute later, this one by Niesel who had initiated the attack by stealing away an MBU free kick from deep within its own end.
  • The final tally came off a corner kick opportunity, with Swasey poking a close-in shot inside the left post after the corner had deflected off Way's shin.

NOTABLES
  • More striking than Methodist's 29-9 advantage in total shots was its 18-2 bulge in shots on goal. Maggie Hunt -- who collected 10 saves Saturday in a double-overtime 1-1 draw -- easily made saves on both of the Fighting Squirrels' shots on frame.
  • The Monarchs' dominance in possession was visible not only by its shots numbers, but also in earning six corner kick chances against none for the home team.

UP NEXT
  • Methodist hosts William Peace University Saturday at 6 p.m. in a conference contest at the Monarch SoccerPlex. The game will also be the home team's Play 4Kay Night.
  • Mary Baldwin will travel to Washington, D.C., on Wednesday to take on host Trinity University in a non-conference bout.
