DANVILLE, Va. In its USA South Athletic Conference finale, Methodist football fell to host Averett University, 43-7, Saturday evening.

Taj Outten that set up a one-yard
Vontre Howard touchdown. Through the first quarter, the Cougars also registered two first downs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- It all started really well for Methodist with a promising display in the first quarter.
- On Averett's third offensive drive of the game, Taj Outten delivered with what could have been the play of the game. Outten jumped a hitch route and intercepted Bryce Jackson and returned it 68 yards before being tackled down at the Monarchs' one-yard line. Howard scored on the very next play to give Methodist momentum and a 7-0 lead.
- The Monarch defense forced two three-and-outs of Averett on the Cougars' first two drives and held Averett to only one first down through the first 15 minutes.
- Kobe Praylow returned the opening kickoff 43 yards to give Methodist a short field but three first downs later, a missed 25-yard field goal kept the game at 0-0. The Monarchs' next drive stalled near the red zone, at the Cougars' 25-yard line, due to a lost fumble.
- A 25-yard field goal and a safety cut the deficit to 7-5 for Averett midway through the second quarter. With 3:48 remaining in the half, Joshua Tapscott exploded through the line and raced for a 70-yard touchdown run to give the Cougars their first lead at 12-7.
- Kelvin Waites kept Averett from adding another touchdown with his interception at the goalline, capitalizing on an overthrown pass from Jackson.
- The Cougars added another three points via a field goal as time expired in the half after Terrell England managed to pick off the Monarchs and return it 26 yards to the Methodist 15-yard line.
- Averett exploded in the third quarter with 21 points (and 28 total in the second half) to take this game from the Monarchs. A blocked Methodist punt and a lost fumble afforded the Cougars two of those four touchdowns.
