4th-Quarter Surge in Loss at Guilford

GREENSBOORO, N.C.  Returning to the court for the first time in nearly two weeks, Methodist women's basketball was bested by host Guilford College, 69-44, in non-conference action Monday evening.

A 40-19 halftime deficit proved to be too much to overcome for the Monarchs, although Methodist was able to "win" the fourth quarter, 19-10.

Destiny Hardin led all players with a game-high 17 points. She has come on strong as of late, scoring 38 points in the last two games after scoring 43 points in the first nine games of the season.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Guilford, 69-44
Records: Methodist 2-9, Guilford 7-2
Location: Ragan-Brown Field House; Greensboro, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hardin made her presence known early, scoring the first basket of the game following a Tyzarea Alexander steal. She had a hand in the next Methodist bucket too, assisting on a jumper from Jazanae Billings.
  • A 16-2 Guilford run turned a 6-6 tie into a 22-8 Quaker lead with two minutes remaining in the first quarter. That lead blossomed into a 22-point, 40-18 advantage right before halftime.
  • The Monarchs salvaged the final quarter behind a combined 14 points from Hardin and Alexander in the period.

STAT FACTS
  • Alexander finished just shy of yet another double-double with nine points and eight rebounds, plus three steals.
  • Billings had a team-high 10 rebounds in addition to seven points and two steals.
  • Hardin is more than just an offensive threat, proven by her two blocks and two steals. She also had six rebounds. She was 9-of-14 from the free throw line.
  • Guilford was led by the 16 points, eight rebounds, and four steals of Monell Dunlap.
  • Methodist nearly fought the Quakers to a draw in points off turnovers with the Monarchs earning 19 points off giveaways to Guilford's 20. However, the Quakers had a sizeable advantage in points in the paint with a 52-16 point differential. Guilford also had a 57-35 edge in the boards.
