Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Yellow Jackets buzz Monarchs

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist's men's lacrosse team staged a late second-quarter rally to trail visiting Randolph-Macon College by only three goals at the halftime break Saturday afternoon, but the Yellow Jackets stiffened in their defensive end during second-half action to deal the host Monarchs an 11-4 season-opening defeat in non-conference play at Monarch Stadium.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Randolph-Macon def. Methodist, 11-4
Records: Methodist 0-1, Randolph-Macon 1-0
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Matt Pemberton scored an even-strength goal at the 5:15 mark of the second quarter to finally put Methodist on the scoreboard and cut into RMC's 5-0 start to the game.
  • AJ Mejia followed up with his first of the season coming 45 seconds later on a man-advantage, further trimming the deficit and eventually allowing the Monarchs to enter the halftime break with only a 5-2 deficit up in lights.
  • Randolph-Macon scored in the opening minute of the third quarter, then five and seven minutes later added two more goals while toughening up in its defensive third to open up what had been looking like a tightly contested affair.
  • Mejia added a goal later in the third and assisted on Jack Bryan's man-down early in the fourth quarter, but those would be the only two markers for the Monarchs over the final 30 minutes of action.

STAT SHEET
  • Starting goalkeeper Liam Von Hoene was under pressure for much of the afternoon and came up with 22 saves, including seven in the final quarter.
  • Randolph-Macon built a huge advantage in shots, 58-14, during the victory, while also totaling 14 caused turnovers.
  • Methodist had seven extra-man opportunities but only notched one goal on those chances.
  • Mejia finished the afternoon with three points (two goals, one assist) to lead Methodist's attack.
  • Nine different Yellow Jackets scored in the contest, with only Colin DeSesa scoring more than once as he finished with three goals and an assist for a four-point day.
  • Randolph-Macon's Chris Cerrina earned the win between the pipes with four saves.

NEXT UP
  • The Monarchs visit a familiar foe, ex-conference member Ferrum College, in their next game Saturday at 7 p.m. in Ferrum, Virginia.
  • Randolph-Macon hosts Catholic University in a Saturday afternoon contest.
