Once the Ball Got Rolling…

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Using a late offensive outburst, Methodist baseball defeated visiting Emory & Henry College, 12-2, in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon.

The game was closer through its middle, until the Monarchs' barrage. It was a 2-0 game entering the fourth inning and a 2-2 game entering the sixth. However, the Methodist offense came alive late and pushed 10 runs across the plate in the final three innings.

Methodist scored five runs in the eighth to help create the lopsided score. The culprits responsible: a two-RBI homerun from Matthias Carter and a two-RBI double from Tucker Criswell.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Emory & Henry, 12-2
Records: Methodist 15-2, Emory & Henry 2-11
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A single by Clay Richardson in the fourth helped tie the game at 2-all. Richardson's well-hit ball up the middle drove in two runs.
  • Tucker Criswell batted in the go-ahead run, scoring Alex Kachler in the sixth with a double. Then the Monarchs utilized the art of the sacrifice fly to score their next three runs.
  • The 7-2 lead surely would have been enough firepower to ensure a victory but the Methodist bats were not quite done cooling off just yet. Carter belted a homer to the left field and Criswell sent a double to center to tally another four runs for the Monarchs. Criswell scored the 12th and final run of the day off of Emory & Henry throwing error.
  • It was a slow start for the Monarchs as they did not register their first hit of the game until the third inning-- a single, followed up by three consecutive groundouts. Methodist finished with 13 hits. Meanwhile, the Wasps had three hits in the second to score its two runs and then had three hits total for the rest of the game.

STAT FACTS
  • Criswell delivered with three hits, all doubles. Needless to say, the three doubles marks a season-high for Methodist. Criswell also tallied four RBIs and scored thrice.
  • It was the second career homer for Carter. His first homerun came in his freshman year, in 2017. Carter also had a double in the game to give him a statline of two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
  • Will May and Richardson also had two hits.
  • Ricky Cameron earned the win by pitching three innings of relief and not surrendering even a hit. Eli Futrell provided support with two strikeouts in two innings and no hits allowed.

UP NEXT
  • The Monarchs leap back into USA Athletic South Conference action with their next series, a three-game home set against Maryville (Tenn.) College, beginning with a Saturday doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
  • Emory & Henry continues its road trip with a visit to N.C. Wesleyan College on Wednesday afternoon.
