Walkoff end to Game 2 thriller

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist baseball prevailed in extra-innings with a tenth inning, 4-3 victory in the nightcap of a USA South Athletic Conference doubleheader against Maryville (Tenn.) College, Saturday afternoon.

The walk-off win comes on the heel of a tough 3-1 defeat in the front end of the doubleheader. That loss handed the Monarchs their first conference loss of the season, after six straight victories to open league play.

Elliot Manley doubled as the game-tying run scored in the eighth, and the game-winning run scored in the tenth. Ethan Carmack earned the RBI to tie the game at 3-all and a booming triple from Tucker Criswell won the game for Methodist.

The Monarchs would have never had the chance to force extra-innings though without the excellent performances on the mound from Tristen Luck and Thomas Dean. Luck gave up no earned runs and only two hits in seven innings and Dean gave up one hit and allowed no runs in his three innings.

THE ESSENTIALS

Records: Methodist 16-3 (USA South 7-1), Maryville (Tenn.) 11-8 (4-5)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Manley singled up the middle to lead off the bottom of the tenth inning and in the very next at-bat, Criswell hit a triple to the warning track of right center, scoring Manley for the win.
  • The Scots' converted a bases loaded situation with one out in the seventh into two runs and a 3-2 lead. A fielding error turned a routine groundout into two runs scored.
  • The Maryville lead did not hold for long as Richardson and Manley tied the game up in the next inning.
  • In the first inning, Clay Richardson scored two runners on a single up the middle. The Monarchs led 2-0 and then 2-1 up until the top of the seventh.
  • Game 1 was scoreless through the first five innings until a sacrifice bunt scored the Scots' Gabe Lopez in the sixth. The Monarchs' Will May countered with a double and scored Criswell for the 1-1 draw.
  • Maryville finally broke the tie in the top of the ninth with a single to left center from Logan Hayes, scoring Matthew Petzelt from second. Petzelt scored the winning run but the Scots added one more run as insurance for a 3-1 score.
  • The Monarchs had a chance to force extra-innings in the bottom of the ninth. Richardson doubled with one out and a groundout got him to third. Rob Wilkerson drew a walk and then stole second but Christian Poulsen got the final out with a strikeout.

STAT FACTS
  • It was a duel to see which pitcher would blink first in each game. After giving up a single in his first at-bat, Thomas Dean was lights out. With the exception of an error that allowed a Scot to reach first, Dean retired eight consecutive batters for the win.
  • Tyler Brown exited in the seventh inning of Game 1 after giving up only earned run and eight hits for the day.
  • For the other side, in Game 1, Poulsen allowed only seven hits, two walks, and one earned run while pitching a complete game and Jordan Davis started the nightcap, giving up no earned runs and only three hits in 6.2 innings of action.
  • Kachler had three hits in the two games combined, a team-high, and Matthias Carter drew a combined three walks.
  • Will May led the Monarchs at the plate in the first game with two hits in four at-bats.
  • Poulsen is a rare player who can lead his team on the mound and at the plate. Poulsen had three hits, a walk, and one RBI in Game 1. Gabe Lopez also had three hits in the first game.

UP NEXT
  • Methodist and Maryville will play the third game in the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
  • The Monarchs are home again Wednesday to play a non-conference single-game series against Tufts University at 4 p.m.
