FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. It was a tough start to USA South Athletic Conference play for Methodist softball as visiting N.C. Wesleyan came away with the sweep with a 4-0 win and a five-inning 10-0 victory Tuesday afternoon.

Samantha Jacobs was a bright spot at the plate, finishing the day with a combined three hits and one walk. In Game 1,
Jordyn Propst held the Battling Bishops to only four runs (three earned), and seven hits in her six innings of action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Battling Bishops scored a run in the second inning of the first game and that 1-0 score held up until the fifth inning. The Bishops added two runs in the fifth and an extra run in the sixth to separate from Methodist.
- Runners on first and second in the bottom of the fifth represented the Monarchs' best chance to score but a pop up ended those hopes.
- N.C. Wesleyan scored nine runs in the third and fourth innings of the nightcap to force mercy. Kayla Molivas hit a bases-clearing double to score three runs in the third and Meredith Mize had a two-RBI double in the fourth, fueling the outburst.
- After drawing the Monarchs' only walk in the first inning second game, Jacobs broke up a potential no-hitter with her single in the third and Blythe Best followed up with a single in the fourth.
STAT FACTS
- Ashley Benge drew two walks in Game 1.
- Besides Jacobs and Best, Kelsey Smith was the only other Monarch to register a hit in the doubleheader. Carleigh Haywood drew a walk.
- Nichole Mooney was the star of Game 2 for N.C. Wesleyan with three hits and three runs scored in three at-bats and Bryona Knight had two hits and scored twice in the first game.
- Coach Ron Simpson has to be lamenting the fielding errors from Methodist. The Monarchs committed a combined six errors in the two games. Of the total 14 N.C. Wesleyan runs, the Bishops scored three off of errors.
