Walkoff Hit Fuels Sweep of Averett

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  In dramatic fashion, Methodist baseball completed a USA South Athletic Conference sweep of Averett with a 4-3 walkoff victory in Game 1, and a 6-1 win in the nightcap Saturday evening.

The Monarchs were down 3-2 entering the ninth inning before Ethan Carmack tied the game with a homerun to left field, and soon after, Will May's bunt brought Christian Yarbrough home for the winning score.

In Game 2, Methodist registered eight stolen bases, the most since February 2012. Matthias Carter had three and Clay Richardson and Rob Wilkerson had two to help mitigate the fact that the Monarchs did not have any extra-base hits in the nightcap.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Averett 4-3, Methodist def. Averett 6-1
Records: Methodist 9-2, Averett 1-10
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Averett took a 3-0 advantage in the third inning of Game 1 and that lead held up all the way until the ninth inning.
  • Before his homerun, Carmack's triple in the sixth scored the Monarchs' first two runs with Jacob Austin and Tucker Criswell crossing the home plate. However, as the potential game-tying run, Carmack was thrown out at home.
  • Leading off the ninth inning, Carmack hit a thundering homer down the right field line to tie the game. Parker Clayton singled up the middle on the next at-bat and a wild pitch and two bunts helped bring Yarbrough, the pinch runner, home.
  • Methodist scored a run in the third, fourth, and fifth innings of Game 2 to take a 3-1 lead before adding another three runs in the last two innings.
  • It was the combined efforts of all the Monarch pitchers involved to ensure the two victories. Seth Beard and Will Walker teamed up to give up only six hits and two earned runs in the first game and Tristen Luck and Thomas Dean joined forces to allow only one earned run in the nightcap.
  • The Monarchs' pitching only got stronger as the game went on as the Cougars were held scoreless for the final six innings of Game 1 and the final seven of the nightcap.

STAT FACTS
  • Beard had six strikeouts in five innings on the mound and Walker earned the win by giving up only two hits in four innings of work.
  • Luck gave up one earned run with four strikeouts in four innings and Dean pitched four innings of scoreless baseball with four strikeouts, as well.
  • Nine different Monarchs logged hits today, including a team-leading three hits and three RBIs by Carmack in the first game and a team-leading two hits and two RBIs from Richardson in the nightcap.
  • The Monarchs' plate discipline in Game 2 tied a season-high with nine walks drawn. Carter and Alex Kachler each drew two.
  • Chase McKinney and Tanner Bradshaw led the Cougars at the plate with four hits each between both games.

UP NEXT
Averett and Methodist will play the third game of the series on Monday at Armstrong-Shelley Field, with a tentative play-time of 2 p.m.
