FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Two days after a 4-3 walkoff win against Averett, Methodist baseball again pulled off another walkoff 4-3 victory over the visiting Cougars, this time coming in the tenth inning of USA South Conference action on Monday afternoon.
In the DH spot, freshman
McKinley Strickland more than proved his worth with four hits, including two doubles in five at-bats, leading the Monarchs. It was his last hit that ended up as the game-winning score with
Will Dagenhart crossing the plate as the pinch-runner for Strickland, off of a
Matthias Carter single.
Another freshman that played like a phenom was
Ricky Cameron. Cameron earned the win today by pitching four innings of scoreless baseball in relief while only giving up one hit and a walk.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Averett 4-3
Records: Methodist 10-2, Averett 1-11
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With one out and runners on first and second, Carter hit the ball in the direction of the Cougars' shortstop. However, instead of a routine groundout, the ball bounced up, hit the body of the fielder and ricocheted into the outfield, allowing Dagenhart to score.
- The Monarchs last chance to finish the game in regulation ended with Alex Kachler stranded at third in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- After the Cougars took advantage of two Monarch errors and used a double steal to score two runs and take a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth, Methodist promptly tied the game with a sacrifice fly from Clay Richardson to bring Strickland home
- As the lead-off hitter, Carter registered the Monarchs' first hit with a single and the team's first run, scoring off of a Tucker Criswell single.
- Ahead 2-1, the Monarchs had opportunities to take a better command of the game but the Cougars escaped a bases loaded situation in the fourth and runners on second and third in the fifth.
STAT FACTS
- Carter, Kachler, Wilkerson, and Parker Clayton each had two hits. Carter also drew two walks, to go with his hits.
- Last year, Methodist did not participate in any extra-innings game but in the 2017 season, the Monarchs went 2-3 in extra-inning games with three of those games spanning 11 innings.
- Despite the win, Head Coach Tom Austin is probably disappointed in the five errors that were committed by Monarchs. The errors almost allowed the Cougars to escape with a win, despite only having five hits.
- The 12 men left on base by Methodist suggests that the Monarchs had multiple chances to avoid extra innings.
- Ryan Traylor and Chase McKinney led Averett at the plate with a hit and two walks each.
UP NEXT
- The Monarchs are on the road for the first time this season, with a non-conference date against Hampden-Sydney College Tuesday at 4 p.m.
- Averett travels to Virginia to play at Ferrum College Tuesday at 4 p.m.
