HAMPDEN SYDNEY, Va. After putting up just single digits in a pair of middle innings, Methodist went for big numbers in back-to-back late innings to finish off host Hampden-Sydney College in a 13-10 non-conference baseball victory Tuesday afternoon.
A six-run seventh and four-run eighth propelled, both times, the Monarchs ahead from deficits against the Tigers.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Hampden-Sydney, 13-10
Records: Methodist 11-2, Hampden-Sydney 4-4-1
Location: Yank Bernier Field at Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium; Hampden Sydney, Va.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trailing 7-2 entering the top half of the sixth inning, Methodist pounded out six runs to wrest the lead away from the Tigers. Alex Kachler's three-run homerun to left field got the ball rolling, followed by a Parker Clayton RBI single. A wild pitch would later plate Ethan Carmack, and Will May's sacrifice fly to center allowed Clayton to race home for Methodist's first lead of the game, at 8-7.
- Hampden-Sydney battled back in front in the bottom of the frame, though, on Jonathan Triesler's bases-clearing double down the leftfield line.
- The Tigers' lead was short lived, as the top of the seventh saw Methodist push four more runs across behind a fielding error, several wild pitches that moved runners long, and eventually a Carmack single that scored Jacob Austin for the final tally in the inning.
- The 'staff' day on the mound was a frustrating one, as four different pitchers each surrendered runs during their brief outings on the bump. Finally, though, Will Walker entered in relief with one out in the seventh and shut the door, going 2.2 innings without allowing a hit or walk while fanning one Tiger batter. Walker (4-0) earned the victory with his shut-down performance.
NUMBERS & NOTES
- Matthias Carter proved a difficult out for the Tiger hurlers, finishing the afternoon 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles. He scored three times and came away with one stolen base.
- Kachler was 2-for-3 with his 3-run knock adding to an earlier RBI.
- The Monarchs were bothersome on the base paths all game long, swiping seven bases to lift their season total to 36.
- Patience at the plate helped spur Methodist along the way to Tuesday's victory. The Monarchs accumulated 10 base on balls from seven players, led by two apiece from Clay Richardson, Tucker Criswell and Kachler. Both Richardson and Criswell would eventually score two runs apiece.
- Tuesday's game was Methodist's first road game of the season.
