BEREA, Ky. Methodist baseball on Saturday morning won the front end of a USA South Conference doubleheader against host Berea College, 6-4, while the nightcap was postponed until Sunday following a rain delay.
At the time of the delay, the Monarchs were leading Game 2, 5-1 in the top of the second inning.
An excellent outing by
Will Walker earned a victory for the Monarchs in the first game. Walker pitched 8.2 innings in relief, including seven straight scoreless innings. Prior to a two-run Mountaineer outburst in the ninth inning, Walker had allowed only four hits and no runs.
At the plate,
Alex Kachler had two hits and scored two runs, leading the Monarchs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Monarchs broke a 2-2 tie in Game 1 with Elliot Manley bringing Ethan Carmack home in the sixth inning. Methodist added three more runs in the final three innings as insurance.
- The Mountaineers had a chance to force extra innings but they were only able to score two runs off of the four hits in the bottom of the ninth. Runners on first and second were left stranded as Will Walker got the fly out for the final play of the game.
- The runs for Berea came few and far between in Game 1 as the Mountaineers scored two runs in the first and ninth innings each.
- It was not the best day for the Berea defense. Two Mountaineer errors resulting in two runs in Methodist and the Monarchs also scored twice from wild pitches.
- The Monarchs had pounced all over Berea in the nightcap before the rain delay. Alex Kachler had a two-RBI homer in the first and Methodist added another two runs in the second, scoring off of a wild pitch and a balk. The game was postponed with the Monarchs batting and runners on first and third with only one out.
STAT FACTS
- The amazing patience and discipline at the plate led to the Monarchs tying their season-high in walks drawn with ten. Carmack and Manley each drew two walks to lead the team.
- McKinley Strickland filled his stat-sheet up with two hits, one walk, and a run scored and a run batted in. He also had two steals and a double.
- Josh Wilson and Nicholas Bottom led the Mountaineers with two hits a piece in the first game.
UP NEXT
Game 2 resumes tomorrow at 10 p.m., with Berea and Methodist returning to diamond for the third game in the series at approximately 1 p.m. Following the third game on Sunday, the Monarchs will return to Armstrong-Shelley Field to play Emory & Henry Tuesday at 4 p.m.
