Men’s Lax Tames WildCats

LYNCHBURG, Va.  The Monarchs outscored Randolph College 5-1 in the first and fourth quarters to earn an 11-7 non-conference men's lacrosse victory in Lynchburg, Virginia, Saturday afternoon.

Cade Crews and Mark Chatt scored the team's first four goals to take a 4-1 lead over the Wildcats in the first half. Randolph fought back to cut the deficit to within one score but the Monarchs opened the fourth quarter with three consecutive goals to seal the game.

Hunter Vaughan and Crews led the Monarchs with four points each. Vaughan had two goals and two assists and Crews had three goals and an assist.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Leading 8-6 at the start of the fourth quarter, Connor Glenn scored two straight goals and Vaughan added a third consecutive goal to give the Monarchs their biggest lead of the game.
  • Two consecutive Wildcat goals within thirty seconds of each other cut the deficit to 4-3 late in the second quarter but two Methodist scores in the last five minutes of the period gave the Monarchs a 6-4 advantage entering halftime.
  • The two teams traded goals in the third quarter, scoring two each.
  • The game started off slow with only two goals scored in the first quarter-- both by Methodist.

STAT FACTS
  • Chatt added an assist to give him three points for today and Bryce Kephart was the other players with multiple points, in addition to Glenn's two points. Kephart had two points (one goal and one assist).
  • AJ Mejia was the defensive anchor for Methodist with a team-leading six ground balls scooped up and three caused turnovers.
  • Liam Von Hoene had 10 saves, his fourth of five games with double-digit saves.
  • Despite the lopsided-score, the game was equal stats-wise as Methodist took 37 shots and Randolph took 36. The Wildcats had one more turnover (26) than the Monarchs and each team had a good clearing percentage.
  • Randolph actually had a relatively sizeable advantage in ground balls and faceoffs won. The Wildcats led 23-18 in ground balls picked and 13-7 in faceoffs won.
  • Methodist had 26 shots on goal compared to 17 for the Wildcats, the only stat that favored the Monarchs.
  • Prince Charles led Randolph with two goals and an assist.

  • Methodist will return home to take on Saint Vincent (Pa.) College Tuesday at 1 p.m.
  • Randolph College will not return to the field until March 13 when they take on visiting St. Mary's (Va.) at 4 p.m.
