MONTGOMERY, Ala. Some nights…
…it's not in the cards.
…the ball doesn't bounce your way.
…it just plain isn't your night.
Take your pick, but that last one seems most fitting in regard to 17th-ranked Methodist's 16-2, seven-inning loss to 13th-ranked and host Huntingdon College Friday evening in USA South Athletic Conference baseball action.
The Monarchs got off to an almost unimaginable start, surrendering more runs in the opening two innings -- eight -- than they had sent to the plate (seven) through that point in the game.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Huntingdon def. Methodist, 16-2 (7)
Records: Methodist 17-4 (8-2 USA South), Huntingdon 17-4 (9-3)
Location: Posey Field; Montgomery, Ala.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- An infield single and a two-out single into left field plated the Hawks' first run in the bottom of the game's first inning.
- Huntingdon sent 13 batters into the box in the bottom of the second, pushing seven runs across, increasing Methodist's deficit to eight runs.
- A Jacob Austin triple that scored Will May, and an RBI-single through the left side that brought Austin home trimmed the margin to six heading into the bottom of the third.
- The Monarchs have rallied from far behind already this season, doing so as recently as a 7-2 deficit March 5 at Hampden-Sydney in an eventual 13-10 road victory.
- That type of rally never materialized against the Hawks, however, who limited Methodist to just one more hit the rest of the way while themselves posting crooked numbers in the fourth and sixth innings.
STAT FACTS
- Austin doubled into right center in the top of the first with one out, and then advanced to third on a passed ball. He was left stranded their following a pair of strikeouts.
- Methodist walked four pitchers to the mound in the loss with each surrendering at least two runs, though six Huntingdon runs were unearned during the loss.
