NORFOLK, Va. Methodist baseball used a late offensive surge to finish off a triumph over host Virginia Wesleyan, 15-5, in a non-conference matchup Wednesday afternoon.
Methodist scored 12 of its 15 runs over four innings, including six runs in the eighth to achieve the lopsided victory.
The Monarchs drew 14 walks, a season-high and tied for the most since the 2015 season. Three different Methodist players logged three walks, including
Matthias Carter,
Clay Richardson and
McKinley Strickland, while
Alex Kachler led the team with three hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Monarchs scored six in the eighth off of four hits (two doubles and two singles), as well as four walks, and a hit by pitch. Methodist still left the bases loaded despite its success scoring.
- Altogether, through the fifth and eighth innings, the Monarchs scored 12 runs off of 10 hits and nine walks.
- Methodist had two hits in the other innings and both of those hits came in the third when Kachler singled to score one run and Tucker Criswell doubled to give the Monarchs a 3-1 advantage.
- Austin Obenour homered in the first inning and that stood as the only run for the Marlins until the eighth when Obenour doubled to score Va. Wesleyan's second run of the game and Jordan McDonough knocked a three-run homerun, leading to four more runs total for the Marlins.
STAT FACTS
- It was a team effort offensively as nine different Monarchs registered hits, seven different players scored two runs, and five different players had multiple RBIs.
- Jacob Austin had two hits and a team-high three RBIs and Richardson, Strickland, Criswell, and Will May all finished with two RBIs each.
- Criswell and Parker Clayton each drew two walks while Carter logged two stolen bases.
- Seth Beard pitched four peerless innings of relief, giving up no runs and only two hits with five strikeouts.
