DEMOREST, Ga. Clay Stevenson notched a career-high 19 saves to help Methodist men's lacrosse hold on tight for a 6-5 win over host Piedmont College to clinch the second seed in the East Division of the USA South Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon.
Ninety-two shots were launched in the game (a 54-38 advantage owned by Piedmont) and yet somehow, only 11 goals were scored. In the lowest scoring game of the season for Methodist, only two goals were scored in the second half and none in the final 11:37 of the game.
While the victory does mean that the Monarchs leapfrog the Lions in the league standings, a conference tournament first round rematch was already a certainty. Next weekend, in LaGrange, Georgia, Methodist and Piedmont square off again in a winner-moves-on match-up.
