Monarchs Primed for Conference After Shutout Win

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The Methodist University women's tennis team looks primed for the upcoming USA South Athletic Conference postseason tournament, finishing off its seventh consecutive league victory with Saturday's 9-0 shutout of visiting Salem College.

A sweep of the doubles action set up Jill Lawrence and Jessica Tucker to earn, respectively, the fourth and clinching fifth point against the Spirits during singles play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The doubles sweep began with a pair of shutout victories by the Monarchs' Nos. 3 then 2 tandems. Allison Himes and Sydni Lewis snared the first point followed soon after by Ashton Walker and Abby Caddick in the 2-doubles slot.
  • Taylor Jackson and Lawrence completed the sweep with their 8-1 triumph at No. 1.
  • Lawrence was first to finish in singles action winning in straight sets at No. 4 without surrendering a game.
  • Tucker picked up the clinching fifth point at 6-singles, winning in the exact same manner as did Lawrence.
  • Straight-set wins by Caddick at No. 5, Jackson at No. 3, Walker at No. 1 and Himes in the No. 2 spot finished off the afternoon.
  • In singles play the six Monarch players surrendered a combined total of just five games.

NEXT UP
  • A victory in their previous league match secured the No. 2 seed in the conference's East Division for Methodist.
  • The top four teams from East and West move on to the USA South tournament, running April 26-28 at the LaGrange College Varsity Tennis Courts.
