FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. In a game that doubled as the home and regular season finale for Methodist baseball, visiting Virginia Wesleyan stole a win from the 19th-ranked Monarchs, 4-3, in non-conference action Monday afternoon.
The Marlins scored all four of their runs in the fourth inning and Methodist just could not generate enough scoring despite its nine hits and five walks in the game.
Parker Clayton led the Monarchs at the plate with three hits in four at-bats and two runs scored.
Matthias Carter was equally as good with two hits and two walks.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Virginia Wesleyan def. Methodist, 4-3
Records: Methodist 31-7 , Virginia Wesleyan 18-13
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Alex Kachler's sacrifice fly in the seventh scored Clayton to make it a one-run game. However, the Monarchs best chance to even up the score or take the lead ended when Jacob Austin was thrown out at second by the cut-off man, ending the inning with Carter, the tying run at third. Previously, Kachler scored in the sixth to cut the deficit to 4-2.
- The Marlins four runs in the third innings happened off of a sacrifice bunt, a sacrifice fly, a wild pitch, and an error.
- In the bottom of the third, Austin doubled to score Clayton for one run but the Monarchs ended the inning with Carter on third and Austin at second.
- In the bottom of the ninth, with Methodist needing one run to force extra-innings, the Marlins' shortstop Austin Obenour made a very low catch for the lineout for Out 1 and second baseman Brady Fallon snagged the ball and got the second out after a good diving stab erased what should have a base hit through the right side.
- With two outs, Matthias Carter singled and had advanced to second before a groundout for the final out.
STAT FACTS
- In addition to doubles by Austin and Kachler, Tucker Criswell had the other Methodist extra-base hit with a double to lead-off the fourth. Unfortunately, three straight strikeouts succeeded him, leaving him stranded in the inning..
- Seven different Monarchs took the mound in a staff day. Ricky Cameron got the start and went two innings. Nathan Cockman (two innings) and Reese Hobbs (one innings), along with Cameron were the three pitchers to not allow a hit.
- Jacob Pilarski led Virginia Wesleyan at the plate with two hits, two walks, and one run scored.
