Key Walkoff Double

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  In what would prove to be her final home at-bat at Price Field, senior Hannah Key delivered a 2-RBI walkoff double into right-center field that scored Blythe Best and Kelsey Smith, rallying host Methodist to a 3-2 extra-inning victory over William Peace University Sunday afternoon in USA South Athletic Conference softball action.

In the day's opener, the Monarchs plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning but weren't able to even the score in a 4-2 Game 1 loss to the Pacers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • William Peace clung to a tenuous 1-0 all game long in the nightcap, having plated its lone run in the top of the first inning.
  • Down to their potentially final at-bat in the bottom of the seventh and still trailing by that narrow margin, the Monarchs sprung to life beginning with a lead-off walk by senior Ashley Benge.
  • A one-out single by Carleigh Haywood moved Benge to second and a bunt that surprised the Pacers infield loaded the bags for Samantha Jacobs who scorched a liner into short, left field. A drawn-in outfield was well positioned, robbing Jacobs of a hit and RBI and also preventing any movement on the bases.
  • With two outs and down to its final out, Methodist got the timely hit it needed from Bethany Junker who dropped into single into the green grass in front of the left fielder, allowing Benge to race home for the tying run.
  • William Peace scored its international tiebreaker runner in the top of the eighth, and looked for more damage with no outs and runners aboard, but Junker delivered a strike to home from her shortstop position on an infield grounder for the first out of the frame, and senior Savannah Dunn snared a liner to second base and converted the double play with an easy toss to first base against a runner who had committed too far from the bag.
  • Best was Methodist's international runner placed on second base in the bottom of the eighth, and advanced to third on Kelsey Smith's perfectly-placed bunt single, setting the table for Key who delivered the game-winning double.
  • Jordyn Propst threw all eight innings for Methodist in earning the victory from the circle, scattering six hits while surrendering two unearned runs and fanning four.
  • In Sunday's opener, William Peace scored twice in the third inning, added one more in the fifth and another run in the seventh before Methodist finally found some life from its bats.
  • Bethany Junker's infield grounder scored senior Heidi Foreman who had led off with a single, and Best reached on a fielder's choice that pushed Taylor Jacobs across the plate.
  • The Pacers were able to close the deal, however, with an infield pop-up that stranded the tying runner at first base.
  • Brittany Jones took the loss in the circle in Game 1, going all seven innings while allowing four runs on six hits and two walks, and striking out a pair.
