SALISBURY, Md. Methodist women's soccer scored the initial four goals of the game, all in the first half, of its 5-1 victory Saturday afternoon over Lehman (N.Y.) College on the second day of the Sea Gull Classic.
The Monarchs dominated possession, racking up a 37-1 advantage in shots, consistently forced Lightning turnovers and came away the victor in the overwhelming majority of 1-v-1 battles.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Lehman, 5-1
Records: Methodist 1-1, Lehman 0-1
Event: Sea Gull Classic
Location: Sea Gull Soccer Stadium, Salisbury University; Salisbury, Md.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Freshman Laura Harris notched her first collegiate goal to break the seal on Methodist's flood of an attack.
- A possession that began just across midfield evolved quickly, as Bella Nunu pushed deeper into the zone before unleashing a perfectly-paced through ball between Lehman defenders just above the box. Harris easily split the defenders, collected the rolling ball in stride and slid a low roller to the right of goalkeeper Rebecca Gritz and into the netting.
- Soon after, Aiden Sherry did all the work herself in adding a second Methodist goal.
- Sherry dispossessed a Lightning defender of the ball just above the arc of the box, dribbled through a pair of different Lehman defenders then beat the keeper 1-v-1 with a right-footed shot that crossed the goal inside the left post.
- Another theft led to the third goal, also unassisted. Anna Rose Sink made a steal of the last Lehman defender just above the box and drove in alone from the right top, eventually positioning a shot into the bottom, right corner behind the charging netminder.
- Sink earned an assist on the fourth Monarch tally with a cross from the right near the end line, finding an unmarked Kiley Way deep in the box, where she poked a shot back across into the right side for her first goal of the season.
- Methodist's final goal was Carli Lloyd-ish, with defender Grace Page arcing a 35-yard shot from near the right touch line, skimming the underside of the crossbar after clearing the gloves of the leaping Gritz.
MATCH NOTES
