Andrews paces attack in Northwest

PORTLAND, Ore.  On the final day of the Oregon Trail Volleyball Tournament, Methodist volleyball squared off against Pacific University and host Lewis & Clark College Saturday.

The Monarchs took Pacific -- the Northwest Conference's No. 2 preseason pick -- to four sets in a 3-1 neutral-site loss in the morning before falling, 3-0, to host Lewis & Clark in the early afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the first set against Pacific, the Monarchs held a 16-9 lead before the Boxers stormed back to tie the set, 21-21. Pacific did not take its first lead after trailing by seven until it was set point.
  • The Monarchs recovered by taking the second set in a tightly contested back-and-forth, in which neither team led by more than three points. Megan Andrews' kill tied the set at 22-22 and she returned with a service ace to give Methodist the lead. Two Boxer attack errors later gave the Monarchs the set.
  • Pacific reeled off nine straight points late in the third set and then proceeded to take the first seven points in the fourth set for the win.
  • After Lewis & Clark pulled away to win the first set with relative ease, the Pioneers jumped out to a 12-4 lead that ballooned into a 19-11 advantage in the second set. The Monarchs responded by going on a 12-4 run of their own to tie the match at 23-23. Jamie Jones earned the kill to make it a one-point game and Erica East's kill tied the game, both points with assists from Lili Henry.
  • Each team traded points and the lead in the third set. A Leeann Sessoms kill and Kaeli Ryan service ace helped tie the set at 19-all with assistance from a Boxer attack error.

STAT FACTS
  • The Monarchs' 14 service aces against Pacific are the most since October 2017. Janie Harmelink was stellar with seven aces against the Boxers, and Maddie Barga added five in the game.
  • Lili Henry racked up 50 assists combined in the two games.
  • Andrews led the team on the day with 22 kills and 18 digs. She had 12 kills versus Lewis & Clark and 10 against Pacific.
  • Maddie Barga tied for the team-high with 18 total digs, including 14 against Pacific.
