Monarch Men Take Season Opener

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist men's soccer treated fans to a glimpse of a bright future as four freshmen Monarchs each notched their first collegiate goal to vault Methodist over non-conference rival Guilford College, 4-3, in the Monarchs season opener Wednesday evening.

It was Trent Powell's goal in the 36th minute that stood as the game winner. Powell scored a header off of a perfect cross from fellow freshman Charlie Teachey

The Monarchs toted a 4-2 lead into the halftime break. The last time Methodist scored four goals in one half was in the 2016 season. The Monarchs came out ahead on Wednesday despite the Quakers having a 19-13 advantage in shots taken and owning a 55-45 percentage split on possession.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final Score: Methodist def. Guilford, 4-3
Records: Methodist 1-0, Guilford 2-2-1
Location: Monarch SoccerPlex; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Rylan Hoerning tied the game at 1-1 with a header for a goal in the 16th minute following Ulises Sanchez's long cross into the box. Hudson Zeisman put Methodist up 2-1 less than two minutes later after a corner kick as the ball found an unmarked Zeisman in the box for the quick score.
  • In the 28th minute, Zeisman displayed his playmaking abilities by finding Collin Hinnant for the 3-1 lead.
  • Starting in goal for his very first collegiate game, Cole Hupp recorded the most important stat-a W but his most important play may not have been recorded as a stat, at all. Facing a one-on-one situation with Guilford's Kyle Broderick, Hupp charged and was able to free the ball from Broderick's possession before the Quaker was able to direct a shot on target to tie the game.
  • After the Quakers' Ricky Aguilar scored in the 66th minute (his fourth in five games) to make it a one-goal game, the Monarchs were able to hold onto the lead to earn the win.

STAT FACTS
  • Of the four goals and two assists that Methodist registered, all were attributed to underclassmen.
  • Guilford was awarded seven corner kicks to just two for Methodist, not including multiple advantageous positions for free kicks. The Monarchs, however, were able to stamp out every Quaker opportunity.
  • The four goals by Methodist is the most since the 2017 season as last season the Monarchs were more defensive-oriented.
  • Hoerning led Methodist with five shots taken and two on frame.
  • It was a very physical match as five yellow cards were given out in the second half alone.
  • It was a two-man show for Guilford as Aguilar (one goal, one assist, and a key pass directly before an assist) and Giovanni Santibanez (two goals) combined to take 11 of the Quakers' 19 shots and four of the team's six shots on target.
