NEWPORT NEWS, Va. The momentum that had built during a three-game win streak hit a wall Saturday afternoon, as Methodist's string was ended by the No. 4 team in the nation with host Christopher Newport University's 11-0 non-conference women's soccer triumph over the visiting Monarchs.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: CNU def. Methodist, 4-0
Records: Methodist 3-2, CNU 5-0-1
Location: Captains Field, Newport News, Va.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Though the final deficit would end in double digits, Methodist played a strong opening 30 minutes, holding the Captains to just a pair of goals. The second tally, in the 17th minute, came a long 10 minutes after the opening marker.
- Monarch goalkeeper Maggie Hunt came up with four saves during that time span to prevent CNU from running away with the game in its early minutes.
- The backbreaker for the Monarchs was a three-goal outburst in a 95-second span by the Captains, who scored at the 30:28 mark, and then again at 31:22 and 32:03.
- Christopher Newport played defense by owning possession and pushing into its attacking third all afternoon. The Captains rang up a 45-0 advantage in total shots, and a 22-0 lead in shots on goal.
- Hunt finished her time between the pipes at halftime with six saves over her 45 minutes of action, giving way to Mary Newman, who collected five saves, in the second half.
