Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ja'Shawn Steward-Johnson

Better Late Than Never!

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Two goals. A minute and seven seconds. That was all Methodist men's soccer needed to recover from a 1-0 deficit and defeat visiting Huntingdon College, 2-1, in USA South Athletic Conference play Sunday afternoon at the Monarch SoccerPlex.

A day after the 2-1 heartbreaking loss in double overtime against LaGrange College, the Monarchs on Sunday made sure to avoid a repeat, flipping the score against the Hawks. Freshmen Trent Powell and Hudson Zeisman delivered with goals in the 82nd and 83rd minutes, respectively, to vault Methodist past Huntingdon.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final Score: Methodist def. Huntingdon, 2-1
Records: Methodist 2-1 (1-1 USA South), Huntingdon 2-3 (0-2 USAS)
Location: Monarch SoccerPlex; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trent Powell was incredible on his goal to tie the game at 1-all. Powell outraced two Huntingdon defenders to possess a loose ball, found himself with a one-on-one situation against the Hawks' goalkeeper and beat the goalie with a left-footed shot into the bottom right of the net.
  • This time, the Monarchs were determined to avoid going into overtime. A minute and seven seconds after Powell's equalizer, Zeisman delivered the game-winner. Cameron Wilson intercepted a Huntingdon pass and crossed the ball to Zeisman. Zeisman shrugged off the defender at his hip and sent a left-footed shot into the bottom right of the net, as well.
  • In the 22nd minute, Wendel Holden assisted on a Kelan LeBlanc goal to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. For 60 minutes, it appeared that LeBlanc's goal would hold as the only score in a game where the Monarchs' offense looked out of sorts at times.
  • The Methodist defense came through clutch in the 56th minute with a team save after the Hawks' Austin Priemer seemingly had an open look on goal after a corner kick.

STAT FACTS
  • Freshman goalie Cole Hupp was outstanding as well with eight saves of his own against the one goal allowed.
  • Trent Powell put all three of his shots on target, a team-high.
  • Rylan Hoerning led the team with five shots (two on frame).
  • Out of the 21 shots Methodist took, seven were on target compared to 10 on target out of 15 total shots for Huntingdon.
