CARY, N.C. A pair of goals in the opening minutes -- including one just 57 seconds into the game -- left visiting Methodist fighting an uphill battle in an eventual 3-1 loss to William Peace University in USA South Athletic Conference men's soccer action Wednesday evening.
Rylan Hoerning's acrobatic volley into the William Peace netting in the 78th minute would get the Monarchs onto the scoresheet, but the marker was only the first of three needed tallies after the Pacers had added a third goal early in the second half.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: William Peace def. Methodist, 3-1
Records: Methodist 2-2 (1-2 USA South), William Peace 3-2-1 (1-1-0)
Location: WakeMed Soccer Park; Cary, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pacers scored quickly, coming from their own end and driving down the left touch line before connecting a pair of passes into the box for Sammy Suazo's strike across the frame. Methodist goalkeeper Cole Hupp made a valiant leap to his left, even making contact, but wasn't able to completely arrest the shot that trickled across the goal line.
- A trip in the box by a Methodist defender along its right edge provided WPU with another scoring chance, and Ivan Ponce converted the PK into a 2-0 lead, just 2 minutes and 18 seconds into the contest.
- Suazo added a second goal, converting a cross from Jorge Aguilar in the 54th, to increase the Pacers' cushion to three.
- Fighting to cut into that lead, Methodist was able to eventually sustain heavy pressure in its attacking third, beginning with a throw in from Hudson Zeisman on the right touch line.
- Multiple touches and multiple possession changes bounced around the top of the box until Tyler Sheridan pushed a pass across the box to Zeisman, still on the right, from where he lofted a ball back across the box. A Pacer defender was first in the air to the ball, but his header was steered toward Methodist's Charlie Teachey just above the box, where his own header dropped in between two defenders deep in the box for Hoerning's sideways volley into the upper, right corner of the goal.
NUMBERS
- Take away the PK by the Pacers and Methodist, for the most part, was holding off the challenges from the WPU attack. The Monarchs limited the home team to a total of just 11 shots and only 7 on frame.
- Hupp finished the evening with four saves, while his WPU counterpart, Jacob Smith, ended with three stops.
