Monarchs, Tornados Finish Deadlocked

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Playing host to visiting Brevard College, Methodist men's soccer played to a double-overtime draw against the Tornados Saturday afternoon in USA South Athletic Conference action.

Lawson Lamm put the Monarchs on the board first with a goal in the 67th minute that would have stood as a game winner but in the final minute of the second half, Jackson Riddle scored for Brevard to force overtime.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist ties Brevard, 1-1 OT2
Records: Methodist 2-2-1 (1-2-1 USA South), Brevard 0-3-2 (0-0-2)
Location: Monarch SoccerPlex; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Early in the first half, Methodist was awarded four corner kicks in the span of five minutes. The Monarchs were able to convert those four corners into four shots but two were saved and two were off target.
  • Riddle scored off a corner kick with 53 seconds remaining in the game. His first shot was blocked but he was able to score off of the rebound to tie the game.
  • Goalie Cole Hupp saved his best for last as he faced five shots and earned three saves in the first overtime period (only 10 minutes) alone.

NUMBERS
  • Both teams are probably lamenting the missed opportunities to earn a victory. The Tornados had 10 corner kicks and the Monarchs had nine. Of the combined 22 shots taken, only nine were on target.
  • It was a very chippy game that featured 25 fouls and three cards, including a red card on a Brevard player in the 69th minute.
  • Methodist's Alex DiPaolo registered the only shot by either team in the final overtime period. It was off-target.
  • In regulation, the Monarchs had a 9-7 shot advantage, including a 7-3 differential through the first 45 minutes.
  • Hupp had five total saves on the day.
  • Lamm logged a game-high three shots.

UP NEXT
  • Methodist travels to Norfolk, Va. for a non-conference bout against Virginia Wesleyan at 4 p.m. Sunday.
  • The road trip continues for Brevard as they travel to Rocky Mount, N.C. to play N.C. Wesleyan Sunday at 1 p.m.  in conference action.
