HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tied 4-4 in the first set, the Monarchs went on a 11-4 run to place themselves firmly in the driver's seat to take a set. However, Roanoke rallied back with a 10-2 run to take a 21-19 lead. Linsey Bailey earned two consecutive kills to clinch the first set in favor of the Maroons.
  • In the second set, the Monarchs had leads of 4-0, 11-5, and 15-11 before Roanoke tied the set at 16-16. Down 23-21, this time it was the Monarchs that earned consecutive kills to take the second set. Maddie Barga's service ace gave Methodist a 24-23 lead and a Maroon error was set point.
  • After the first two sets were 25-23 in favor of each team, Roanoke used a 13-2 run that included six consecutive Maroon kills to take the third set handily, 25-14.
  • "Anything you can do, I can do better." That was the theme of the night as the Monarchs went on an 11-0 run in the fourth set to win going away, 25-11. Andrews had four kills in that pivotal string. Methodist used a 7-0 run with Savannah Mullis earning the set point kill to give Methodist momentum heading into the fifth and final set.
  • Tied 8-all in the deciding fifth, Roanoke earned the next seven points to seal the win in the fifth.

STAT FACTS
  • This is the fourth time in seven games this season that the first set was decided by two points. Each time, the ball has not swung in the Monarchs' favor. Through 27 games last season, only three first sets were decided by two points.
  • Kaeli Ryan was second on the team with nine kills and two block assists. Alyssa Wrench's three block assists led the team. Wrench also had a team-high 13 digs.
  • The duo of Lili Henry (22 assists) and Mullis (17 assists) set up the Monarch offense.
  • Maddie Barga pitched in with 10 digs (third on the team) and four service aces (team-high).
  • Against Pacific University on Aug. 31, the first two sets of that game were decided by two points, with the Boxers winning the first set and Methodist winning the second. Before that, September 25, 2018, against Pfeiffer was the last time the first two sets were this tightly contested.
  • Telia Harris and Bailey powered the Maroons with a combined 26 kills and five block assists.
